Dickens' collection of works ranges from short stories to Christmas-themed stories to novels and novellas to play to non-fiction. Originally his work appeared in newspapers and magazines and later they were reprinted as books.

Dickens is famous for centering his books around political and social issues of his time. By printing his work in a periodical format he was able to see how his audience reacted to his work and adjust it as needed based on the feedback. For example, Oliver Twist focuses on poverty and child labour.
