J. Tonson was an 18th-century British bookseller and publisher. The company was founded by Jacob Tonson, who became a prominent figure in the London literary scene in the late 17th century. Tonson was known for publishing works by famous authors such as John Dryden, Alexander Pope, and Jonathan Swift. The company's most famous publication was the 1712 edition of John Milton's "Paradise Lost," which included illustrations by John Baptist Medina. Tonson also published a number of important reference works, including dictionaries and encyclopedias. The company continued to be successful well into the 18th century, and it remained a major player in the London book trade until the early 19th century. Today, J. Tonson is remembered as one of the most important publishers of the early modern period.
