David Copperfield by Charles Dickens FIRST EDITION FIRST IMPRESSION, published in 1850 by Bradbury and Evans, bound from the parts with stab holes to inner gutter, 8vo.
-------------------
Earlier state of the vignette title page with a date, bound without the 8pp of publisher's advertisements as typical. 4 page contents and 6 line errata with 'screamed' for 'screwed' pp.132 line 12. Also with the other of Smith's first impression points: dark plate opposite pp.482, final i on pp.viii misaligned, pp.387 'coroboration' misspelling, etc.
All plates collated as complete (38 plates + frontis + engraved t.p.), 40 total plates by H.K. Browne.
Condition: Good.
Incredibly clean text block with unusually clean plates, mostly free from oxidisation. The frontispiece and engraved title page are oxidised. Plates have some toning and the occasional spotting but generally excellent. Text block is very much the same, VG+ to near fine. Without any bookplates but with an ink signature to the front free endpaper 'Clegg' (?). Spine rubbed and lacking tooled label. Front board detached from binding with some wear to hinges and joints of rear board, though this is attached. Page edges VG+. An excellent copy let down by the detached front board, internally one of the best examples of this first edition we have come across. i
