Updated: Mar 23, 2023

SOLD.

Versailles and the Trianon by Pierre de Nolhac. Illustrated by Rene Binet and published by William Heinemann in 1906. Limited to one-hundred copies, numbered and signed by the artist, of which this is number 1.

SIGNED FIRST EDITION limited to 100 copies signed by the artist, this being number 1 out of 100 (!). Beautifully finely bound by Bumpus Ltd in full morocco and stamped on the inside of the front board. Formerly in the collection of the de Rothschild family. Stunning high quality paper.

-------------------

Many people collect signed limited editions with a premium given to lower numbers. This being the first is obviously extremely rare and desirable. These are ordinarily copies given to people associated with the production of the book and was perhaps the artists or author's own copy, though was definitely given or purchased by the Rothschild family and they could well have been the original recipient.

The unsigned version of the first edition in a similar (but lesser) fine binding is currently available at Sotheby's for 750 USD. There are no copies of the signed first edition currently on the market; it's a rather scarce book!

Condition: Near Fine (NF)

Spine slightly faded with bright gilt. Bound in full morocco by Bumpus. Some wear to raised bands and spine's edge. The binding is firm and secure with both boards securely attached. No attached bookplates, though an ex-libris imprint stamp to first preliminary of the Rothschild collection, non-intrusive. Minor shelf wear. Some minor marks to page edges with top edge slightly dulled. Some minor marks to to boards else near fine. Collated as complete including all colour plates of Rene Binet backed on to black paper with tissue guards. The signature of Rene Binet is in fine condition as is that entire leaf. Text block completely fine with all plates fine. Stunning condition internally, with the only defect being a non-intrusive imprint stamp to a preliminary plus usual edge toning to the verso of the boards as typical.
