The Works of P. Virgilius Maroni is a book by A Chr. Gottl. Heyne, first published in 1767. The book features the complete works of the ancient Roman poet Virgil, including his famous epic poem, the Aeneid. Heyne's edition includes a variety of readings and perpetual registration, which means that it provides alternative versions and explanations of difficult or disputed passages, as well as detailed annotations and commentary on the poems. The book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the literature and culture of ancient Rome, and its influence on Western literature and thought. Heyne's edition is known for its thoroughness and attention to detail, making it an important contribution to the field of classical scholarship.
-------------------
The book is typically divided into four volumes, each containing different works by Virgil and corresponding commentary by Heyne.
Volume 1 typically includes Virgil's Eclogues, which are pastoral poems, and his Georgics, which are didactic poems on farming and agriculture. Heyne's commentary on these works includes detailed notes on the themes, style, and language of each poem, as well as alternative readings and interpretations.
Volume 3 typically contains the last six books of the Aeneid, as well as several other minor poems attributed to Virgil. Heyne's commentary in this volume is similar to the previous volume, with a focus on historical and literary context, as well as alternative readings and interpretations.
Volume 4 typically contains various supplemental materials, including indices, a biography of Virgil, and other related essays and articles. This volume provides additional context and background for Virgil's works, as well as Heyne's commentary and interpretation.
