Richard Monckton Milnes, a.k.a. Lord Houghton, 1st Baron Houghton, FRS. A signed presentation copy of his selected poems dated June 1873, but this copy printed 1868.
Lord Houghton was a poet and politician very closely associated with Alfred Lord Tennyson, Florence Nightingale, Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Keats, William Makepeace Thackeray, Henry Adams, Henry James, William Gladstone, Emperor Napoleon III, King Louis Philippe, Walt Whitman, Carlyle, and Elizabeth Gaskell. He is largely remembered for his contribution to the advancement of women’s rights through the 1870s.
He was a persistent suitor of Florence Nightingale and one of Elizabeth Gaskell’s best friends. It is fascinating to think that this book could have been gifted to any one of these hugely famous people. Unfortunately, the inscription is without a name. However, he kept his circle to the upper echelons of British and American society and it’s likely this was a presentation copy of his poems given to a friend of his. It’s nice to think that it could have been given to any of the aforementioned famous poets for them to look over.
An incredible piece of Victorian history associated with some of the most famous people of the 19th century.
