Finely bound in quarter morocco.
“The highest conception of the lyric poet was given to me by Heinrich Heine. I seek in vain in all the realms of millennia for an equally sweet and passionate music. He possessed that divine malice without which I cannot imagine perfection... And how he employs German! It will one day be said that Heine and I have been by far the first artists of the German language.”
- Friedrich Nietzsche, Ecce Homo
Heine's later verse and prose are distinguished by their satirical wit and irony. He is considered a member of the Young Germany movement. His radical political views led to many of his works being banned by German authorities—which, however, only added to his fame. He spent the last 25 years of his life as an expatriate in Paris.
Most of the early copies of Heine’s works were burnt by the Nazis in 1933 on Berlin’s Opernplatz. This makes early copies and particularly first editions practically impossible to find. Heine was highly regarded by Nietzsche and his poetry frequently set to music by composers such as Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn, Fanny Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, Hugo Wolf, Richard Strauss, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Edward MacDowell, Sophie Seipt, Charlotte Sporleder, Maria Anna Stubenberg, Clara Schumann and Richard Wagner. He was also vehemently disliked by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party for being Jewish, and thus disliked by Israel for his conversion to Christianity later in life, though some claim him to be one of the most prominent figures in Jewish history.
This book was published posthumously in 1884 in Paris, this being the highly scarce first edition.
