The very scarce second print of the first edition, printed in Livorno in 3 volumes. "This edition, almost the same format and equal number of volumes as the 1st Milanese edition is believed to be the first reprint of the novel" (Vismara, 2); Parenti Manzoni, Bibliography, 36. This being highly significant as there were 9 editions printed this year alone due to its popularity.


Quarter bound in morocco. The most celebrated Italian novel of the 19th century. The original edition of 2000 copies sold out very quickly and numerous reprints quickly followed; there were nine published in 1827 alone. Parenti Biblioheca Manzoniana 33; Brunet III, 1388. The book is significant enough to be considered by Harvard University to be on of the 50 most important books of all time.

Text blocks fairly clean with light toning and sporadic very minor foxing. Very minor rubbing and very minor marks on spines. All tooled labels present. Very minor part lacking from the 'Tomo 2' tooled label. All boards securely attached. Front hinge of volume one broken. Very minor marks and rubbing on boards. Shelf wear. Very minor scratches on page edge gilt. Bookplate attached to front pastedown in all volumes. Light toning and minor foxing on endpapers and half title in volume one. Light toning and very minor foxing on title page in volume one. More prominent foxing on pages 7 to 27 in volume one. Light toning and very minor foxing on half title and title page in volume two. Light toning and minor foxing on half title and title page in volume three.
