ALL VOLUMES ARE FIRST EDITIONS of this famous and classic work of historical interpretation and scholarship.

Stunning half morocco bindings constituting a rather imposing set at just over 13 kg, with beautiful gilt lettering to spines and delightful matching marbled boards and pastedowns.

Widely acknowledged as the most authoritative Victorian study of ancient Greece, George Grote's twelve-volume work, begun in 1846, established the view of Greek history which still prevails in textbooks and popular accounts of the ancient world today. Grote employs direct and clear language to take the reader from the earliest times of legendary Greece to the death of Alexander and his generation, drawing upon epic poetry and legend, and examining the growth and decline of the Athenian democracy. The work explains Greek political constitutions and philosophy, and interwoven throughout are the important but outlying adventures of the Sicilian and Italian Greeks. Volume 2 continues with the legendary age of the Greeks, paying special attention to the Iliad and Odyssey, and begins the story of historical Greece, setting the geographical and chronological coordinates and introducing the reader to the world of the Peloponnesus. [Blackwells].

Condition: Very Good (VG+)

Spines sunned of vols 1-2, 2-12 with volume 3 showing the original green colour, as typical for this style of binding. Bindings very slightly rubbed, mainly to vol 3 raised bands with others generally near fine/fine. Some very minor shelf wear affecting some volumes. Page edges near fine. Hinges and joints all fine with all boards securely attached and bindings firm. Some volumes with minor damage to corners as typical, with most near fine. All volumes collated as complete including foldout maps and indexes, also fine. No ownership inscriptions or bookplates. Internally completely fine. All three maps present as called for, though the two maps are bound into the third volume not the second, contrasting the instructions on the verso of the start of the mythology of the Gods section in the first volume, though all are present as called for and near fine/fine. Else fine. An incredibly attractive finely bound set.
