Historie de Gil Blas de Santillane by Alain Rene Lesage. Paris, Didot Jeune, L'an Troiseme, 1795.


Beautifully finely bound by Riviere & Son for Henry Sotheran in green crushed morocco, spines gilt in compartments. With lovely engraved plates by Bornet, Charpentier and Duplessi-Bertaux under the direction of Hubert.


A very scarce set, rarely available on the market. The set looks absolutely stunning on the shelf, and is a delight when opened up to see the stunning gilt turn-ins and abundant Hubert engraved plates.

Condition: Near Fine (NF+)


Spines uniformly faded with bright gilt without loss. Bindings generally fine aside from faded spines with bright page edges and beautiful bright turn-ins. Corners sharp and without deformity or damage. Bookplate to pastedown of each volume of the de Rothschild family. Endpaper signed Henry Sotheran, bindings stamped by Riviere & Sons at the bottom of the front turn-ins. Collated as complete including half-titles and all engraved plates. Internally fine save for some extremely mild toning, truly fantastic condition. The best condition set from the 18th century that we have ever had the privilege of offering up for sale.
