Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon in twelve volumes published by Plummer and Brewis Printers in 1818. Bound in leather and stunning gilt.

Contains a frontispiece in volume one and maps in volumes two and three.



Size: 21.5 x 14 x 4 cm each.


Condition: Very Good (VG)


Text blocks extremely clean with very minor and very sporadic foxing. Minor rubbing to spines. Gilt shows well with very minor loss. Joints and hinges VG+ with minor wear and very minor cracking to some spines. Minor marks and discolouration to boards. Small crack to the front board of volume 11. Significant rubbing and discolouration to the bottom right corner of the front board of volume twelve. Very minor crack on the rear board of volume six. Light dulling of page edges. Minor damage to corners. Shelf wear. Very minor wear to headcaps; more significant wear to volumes three, five, nine, eleven, and twelve. Bookplates attacked to front pastedowns. Very minor pencil marks in preliminary page in volume one. Frontispiece ink lightly transferred to title page in volume one with light toning. Map lines transferred to title page of volume two. Minor toning, and very minor and sporadic foxing to title pages. Maps in near fine/VG+ condition.
