Alice's Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Published in 1870 by Macmillan & Co, the twenty-fifth thousand (i.e. first edition fifth printing) following the original of 1865. Collated as complete with an absolutely stunning condition text block (entirely fine) with 42 illustrations by John Tenniel.

The first printing of this book recently fetched $1.8m (USD); this example offered for sale being one of the earliest editions which is at an attainable price. This edition being published two years prior to Through the Looking Glass.

A beautiful example of this rare first edition which is internally near fine with a fine text block and all illustrations fine.

Condition: Very Good Plus (VG+)

Bound in original cloth retaining original blue endpapers and pastedowns. Small ink ownership inscription to half-title dated 1972 else internally without any writing, highlighting, colouring, drawing, etc. Collated as complete including the rather scarce advertisement at the rear which was the first to advertise Through the Looking Glass which was 'nearly ready'. Truly beautiful condition internally, without any foxing - the best example we have ever come across. All illustrations are fine. Text block completely fine. Spine cracked but repaired, sunned. Minor wear and light discolouration to boards. Gilt largely VG/VG+ to boards. Minor wear to corners, some shelf wear, some damage to tail and headcap of spine. Minor wear to rear joint with front joint fine and both hinges fine. Retaining the scarce original sticker of the binder to rear pastedown (Burn & Co).

An absolutely beautiful example of this rare first edition in completely original condition.
