To Which is Added, a Brief Supplementary Account of the Present State of Leicestershire. By John Throsby. Printed in Leicester for the Author in 1777.


The highly scarce first edition of John Throsby’s first published work.

Contains illustrated plates and foldout plates between pages 168 and 169 in volume three and pages 68 and 69 in volume five.


“In 1777 at the age of thirty-seven, John Thosby published his first work, The Memoirs of the Town and County of Leicester, which was issued at Leicester in six duodecimo volumes.” This set being bound into three as typical.



Size: 15.5 x 9 x 2.5 cm.



Provenance: A similar set of one of Throsby’s later works (1791) sold at Sotheby’s lot 103 (30th April 2015)



Condition: Very Good (VG-)


Text block extremely clean with very sporadic very minor foxing. Minor wear to boards. Tooled labels present. Minor damage to headcaps. Five of six boards attached. Front joints and hinges of volumes one and two broken but secured with binding string. Front board of volume three detached. Minor brakes to the rear joint and hinge of volume three. Minor marks on page edges. Bookplates covering older bookplates attached to front pastedowns. Foxing and marks on endpapers. Plates have been trimmed to fit binding as typical. Else very good.
